21 soldiers. 10,000 enemy fighters. 7 hours. Not one of them surrendered.

September 12, 1897. A remote signalling post on the North-West Frontier of British India. Havildar Ishar Singh and twenty men of the 36th Sikh Regiment looked out and saw what was coming — an advancing force of over ten thousand Pathan and Afghan tribesmen.

Their orders were to hold the post. They held it for seven hours. They fought to the last man.

When the story of Saragarhi was recounted before the Parliament of the United Kingdom, every member rose to their feet. The British Parliament has stood for very few battles in history. This was one of them.

Each of the twenty-one soldiers was posthumously awarded the Indian Order of Merit — the highest gallantry honour an Indian soldier could receive from the British Crown. Never before in the history of the world, and never since, has an entire contingent of troops received the highest gallantry honour for a single action.

This is their story — reconstructed from the actual dispatches sent during the battle and the days that followed — told in vivid illustrated panels that place you on the walls of Saragarhi as the numbers close in and the choice becomes clear.

They were Sikh soldiers. They did not consider surrender.
